Van Wyk e Grumbach syndrome: case report

Francisco B. , Haber J. , Santos R.

Introduction: In 1960, Van Wyk and Grumbach described the association of hypothyroidism and precocious puberty. Hypothyroidism leads to delayed bone age and a reduction in growth rate by reducing the amplitude of GH pulses. When precocious puberty is associated with thyroid hypofunction, estrogen action on the epiphyseal plates reduce this delay. We report the case of a child who developed incomplete puberty and reduced growth rate, caused by primary hypothyroidism.<p clas...

Lithium-associated Hyperparathyroidism in a Filipino woman presenting as recurrent ischemic stroke: a case report

Francisco Danica , Lazaro Karen , Puno-Ramos Patricia

Background: Lithium salts have been widely known to induce thyroid dysfunction, however, parathyroid dysfunction due to lithium use is uncommonly encountered. Hypercalcemia is a relatively common consequence of lithium therapy presenting with nonspecific symptoms that may be overlooked. Although cerebral infarction may be an independent event from psychiatric disorders, it can also be a rare complication that must be recognized particularly in patients on lithium therapy.<...

Paper of oxidative stress and placenta on the development of gestational diabetes mellitus

Lopez-Tinoco Cristina , Vilchez Francisco , Visiedo Francisco , Mateo Isabel , Segundo Carmen , Aguilar-Diosdado Manuel

The relationship between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and oxidative stress is not well known and the effect of oxidative stress in GDM placenta and the impact that could have on perinatal morbidity and risk of future complications is also yet to be elucidated. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationships between maternal and placental tissue levels of markers of oxidative stress and antioxidants in women with GDM, which potentially may have considerable clinic...

Assessing risk factors and predictors of mortality in patients with fragility hip fracture

Lima Ferreira Joana , Teixeira e Silva Joana , Simões de Carvalho Francisco , de Brito Marques Francisca , Paula Marques Ana , Maria Príncipe Rosa

Introduction: Fragility fractures are the main consequence of osteoporosis. It results in increased morbidity and mortality. The incidence of fractures has been increasing steadily in Portugal. Hip fragility fractures have been estimated to occur in up to 572/100,000/year in women and up to 232/100,000/year in men. Methods: A retrospective study of hospitalized patients for femoral neck fracture in our institution in 2018 was performed to evaluate their p...

Acute exercise leads to increased HbA1c and fructosamine levels in athletes with type 1 diabetes

Forga Luis , Goni Maria Jose , Chinchurreta Laura , Lafita Franciso Javier , Iriarte Ana , Manuel Fernandez- Real Jose

Introduction: In patients with type 1 diabetes, exercise has not consistently been shown to improve glycemic control, as measured using HbA1c levels. Participation in competitive sports may even worsen glycaemic control. Free radicals and oxidative stress markers are known to increase during acute exercise in parallel to decreased circulating antioxidant concentrations. We aimed to analyze the effects of chronic and acute exercise on circulating HbA1c and fructosamine levels.<...

Metastatic adrenal carcinoma? When not everything is what it seems\..

Rivero Daniel Medina , Gavira Isabel Mateo , Vilchez Lopez Francisco Javier

69-year-old male, with a history of bipolar disorder under treatment, smoker and high blood pressure. He is referred for left adrenal injury detected incidentally by secondary hypertension study. Abdominal CT shows a mass of 67.7×51.8×52.3 mm in the left adrenal area, with radiological characteristics of malignancy and aggressive behavior, contacting the left renal pole and upper splenic pole, compatible with adrenal carcinoma vs. metastasis. The functional study is ...

Metformin reduces viability and proliferation of pheochromocytoma cells in vitro

Meireles Cinthia , Neves Francisco , Simeoni Luiz , Lofrano-Porto Adriana

Background: Pheochromocytomas (PHEO) are rare neuroendocrine tumors derived from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. CatecholaminsÂ’ secretion is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular complications. Malignancy is rare, but still demands effective treatment. Metformin has been shown to have antiproliferative properties in several cancer cell lines, possibly related to its ability to inhibit cell proliferation pathways. Accordingly, we aimed to evaluate the effe...

Follow-up in neuroendocrine tumors: is chromogranin A the confounder?

Martins Diana , Baptista Carla , Velez Ana , Macario Fernando , Carrilho Francisco

Introduction: Chromogranin A continues to be one of the most valuable markers for neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) however, it has several limitations, including its reduced specificity. Methods: The authors present the case of a patient diagnosed with a midgut NET, during follow-up.Results: Male patient, 61 years old, with chronic renal disease (CRD), underwent right hemicolectomy owing to ileo-cecal valve lesion; hist...

Nutritional status in ambulatory patients by Medicine Laboratory

De La Torre Francisco Javier Merida , Bel Pena Nieves

Nutritional status has an important effect on the progression of any disease, not only in hospitalized patients, even more in ambulatory patient of primary care. Although there are many systems of evaluating nutritional status, they are costly and subject to variability amongst individuals. The Medicine Laboratory can correctly perform a nutritional evaluation in a quick an efficient manner. Objective: Analyze the nutritional status by CONUT nutritional e...

Treatment of toxic multinodular goiter with 131 radioactive iodine – effects in volume reduction, thyroid function and autoimmunity

Roque Catarina , Sousa Santos Francisco , Pilli Tania , Pacini Furio

Abstract: Radioiodine is a definite treatment option for toxic goiter. We have evaluated volume reduction, function and autoimmunity outcomes with a 15 mCi fixed regimen. Patients with at least one US evaluation before and after Iodine-131 therapy and with at least one year of follow-up were included. TSH, free-T4, antibodies and goiter volume before and yearly after Iodine-131 treatment were analysed for the length of the entire follow-up. The total 151 patients, 72.6% female...
